Open cell vs. closed cell

Open-cell foam (~R-3.5/inch) is lighter, more affordable and great for interior walls and attics where sound dampening helps. Closed-cell foam (~R-6.5/inch) is denser, adds structural rigidity, blocks moisture, and is our go-to for crawl space walls and rim joists.

Air sealing and moisture control

Unlike batts, foam expands to fill gaps and stops the air leaks that drive Portland heating bills. Closed-cell foam also acts as a moisture barrier — valuable in our wet climate.

Best uses

Crawl space encapsulation, rim joists, vaulted and cathedral ceilings, bonus rooms over garages, and additions. Pair it with attic insulation for whole-home comfort.

Spray Foam Insulation — FAQs

Is spray foam safe once installed?

Yes. Once cured, professionally installed foam is inert. We follow proper ventilation and re-occupancy guidelines during and after install.

Open or closed cell for a crawl space?

Closed-cell, in most Portland crawl spaces — it resists ground moisture and adds an air and vapor barrier in one.

What R-value does spray foam reach?

About R-3.5/inch open-cell and R-6.5/inch closed-cell, so it hits high R-values in less depth than batts.
